San Xavier was founded as a Catholic mission in 1692. The current church was completed in 1797. Here is a more recent photo of the mission:

Often referred to as "the white dove of the desert," the church is considered the finest example of Spanish Colonial architecture in the U.S. Whatever your faith, who can resist entering such a magnificent white structure set against the bright blue Arizona sky?

Henry Buehman was a pioneer photographer in Tucson starting in 1874. He was best known for his portraits. Born in Breman Germany in 1851, he became an apprentice in the photography business at age fifteen. In June 1868 he boarded a steamer for San Francisco and took up residence in that city while employed by a firm of photographers. He struck out on his own after a year and opened his own studio in Visalia, California. He traveled over large portions of California, Nevada and Utah and reached Prescott, Arizona early in July 1874. He equipped himself with spring wagon and a span of mules and started on a long trip to Mexico. But once he reached Tucson, he abandoned the trip to Mexico and settled down to business in the old Pueblo, erecting an adobe building on Congress Street.

Henry Buehman married Miss Estelle Morehouse of Portland, Michigan in Ocotber 1882. He served on the board of school trustees and in1894 was elected mayor of Tucson serving two terms. An artist by profession he was truly that in spirit and was universally beloved by all who knew him. He accumulated considerable property being in the cattle business for several years, his ranch being located in the foothills of the Catalina Mountains, eight miles from San Pedro. When he died of pneumonia in December 1912, he left his wife comfortably provided for and two promising sons, Willis and Albert.
