            “Even in remote West Texas, the Civil War caused division and anguish.  Confederate troops briefly occupied Fort Davis from 1861 to 1862. . . 

“Abandoned by the 8th U.S. Infantry in April 1861, Fort Davis was soon occupied by a Confederate detachment of 2nd Texas Mounted Rifles as part of a plan to extend the Confederacy westward.  At Fort Davis the Confederate troops were more concerned with Apaches than with Yankees.  Their main duty was keeping the San Antonio - El Paso Road open.”

Here is an excerpt of a letter written by Lt. W.P. White, Fort Davis, August 24, 1861:

“On the 5th instant, Lt. R.E. Mays started after a party of Mescalaro Apaches and on the 10th instant overhauled them and captured 100 head of horses without a fight.  On the 11th instant he attempted to whip about 80 or 100 Indians with 14 men, and the whole party was killed except one, a Mexican (guide) by the name of Juan, who made good his escape and brought the news.”
