Red Banded Leafhopper - a photo on Flickriver

            These things suck a lot of juice and it has to go somewhere. Here it's expelling a droplet that will be flicked away. 
This is a test of a smaller "cut down" version of my larger frozen dinner bowl diffuser. With certain lens elements mounted on the front of a primary lens the working distance is pretty short, making use of a larger diffuser impossible. Here the smaller unit still provides enough softening of the flash lighting while giving good clearance between it and close plant material. Bump a leaf and it would have hopped away.

Nikon D40, Isco-Gottingen 135mm f/3.5 Tele-Westanar pre-set lens, with the objective from a badly damaged Cimko 75-200mm zoom lens (a salt water "swimmer"), reverse mounted on the Tele-Westanar. Nikon SB-23 Speedlight flashed through   a  lens mounted "mini-bowl" diffuser. The business of trying to press the lens stop-down pre-set release button a split second after the camera shutter button resulted in a number of badly focused images due to the camera moving slightly from its focused position (hand holding "push-pull" focusing). This one wasn't too bad. I was surprised at how long the leafhopper stayed in place while I moved about trying to shoot at ground level in a very "crampy" position. (Mustn't kneel on Poison Ivy next time).
