Foraging ant, Advocate, Nova Scotia - a photo on Flickriver

            Taken a few hundred yards east of "the fish farm", here's an ant lapping up sweet "something" from the anthers of a wild rose growing behind the barrier beach at Advocate. These roses get a lot of attention from bees, but other insects visit them too. This one was in a relatively sheltered location behind the beach, on the side facing Advocate harbor. Although there was a strong southwesterly wind blowing along the beach, strong enough to lift sand, behind the large drift pile that runs along the top of the beach there were very small sheltered areas of almost complete calm. It was here that bugs of all sorts were feasting.
Taken with a Nikon D60, 105mm f/2.5 AI-S lens focused at infinity, with a Kodak 7 inch f/3.5 Projection Ektanon (slide projector Lens), reverse mounted on the 105mm. Focusing was done by moving the camera front to back.Pop-up flash reflected off foil covered cards of a home-made macro bracket. The right reflector was turned away slightly to allow less light to fall on the shadow cast by the ant.
