Aphid live birth... nearly done - a photo on Flickriver

            Here's an aphid part way through the live birth of a baby. Taken ten minutes after my previously posted image, here the youngster's legs are slowly unfolding and its antennae are "being deployed". The entire birthing process took about 17 minutes... ending when the youngster was deposited on the vine.  Unlike with mammals that provide immediate care after a birth, this "mom" dropped her bomb and slowly walked off after a short pause. The new aphid spent several minutes stretching its legs and waving its antennae slowly. Ten minutes after shooting this pic I couldn't find it.

Nikon D40, Nikon 105mm f/2.5 AI-S lens, with the objective lens group of a Canon CL 8-120mm 15x macro video lens reversed on the 105mm. Lighting was provided by the camera's pop-up flash shot through a lens-mounted diffuser made from a plastic bowl that comes in a "Healthy Choice" frozen dinner.
