DenmarkGjerrild Klint is an up to 20 meters high and almost 2 kilometers long cliff located on the northeast coast of Djursland to Kattegat, about 2.5 km northeast of the village Gjerrild.
Gjerrild Klint's oldest strata date back to the penultimate ice age, the Saale Ice Age, which ended about 128,000 years ago. The youngest layers are from the last ice age, the Weichselian, which peaked around 18,000 BC. Although it lies just north of the Karleby and Sangstrup chalk cliffs, it is a completely different geological structure, built up entirely from glacial deposits.
The coastline Gjerrild Klint marks the transition from the shallow, sandy, mudflat-like coastline of Norddjursland, which begins at Randers Fjord and ends at Gjerrild Klint. Gjerrild Klint marks the start of Djursland's characteristic east-facing stony coast, which is also characterised by its rapid deepening. The stone coast stretches 50 km south from Gjerrild Klint in the north to Gåsehage in the south of Djursland. The coast is interrupted in two places. Firstly, by the 4 km long limestone and flint cliffs at Karlby and Sangstrup just south of Gjerrild Klint. In some places these cliffs lead directly into the sea. The stone coast is also interrupted by the 5 km long Grenaa Strand south of Grenaa, which is the sandy estuary of Kolindsund into the Kattegat. Kolindsund is today an agricultural area, lying down to two metres below sea level, and until the pumps started in 1870 was a lake which in medieval times was a navigable sound from the Kattegat and 30 km into Djursland in the direction of Jutland. In the Stone Age, Kolindsund continued on to Randers Fjord, thereby separating Norddjursland, including the Gjerrild area, as an island lying in the Stone Age sea of Kattegat. ________________________________________________

Die ältesten Schichten des Gjerrild Klint stammen aus der vorletzten Eiszeit, der Saale-Eiszeit, die vor etwa 128.000 Jahren endete. Die jüngsten Schichten stammen aus der letzten Eiszeit, dem Weichseleis, das um 18.000 v. Chr. seinen Höhepunkt erreichte. Obwohl er unmittelbar nördlich der Kalksteinfelsen Karleby und Sangstrup Klinter liegt, handelt es sich um eine völlig andere geologische Struktur, die vollständig aus eiszeitlichen Ablagerungen aufgebaut ist.
Die Küstenlinie Das Gjerrild Klint markiert den Übergang von der flachen, sandigen, wattähnlichen Küstenlinie von Norddjursland, die am Randers Fjord beginnt und am Gjerrild Klint endet. Mit Gjerrild Klint beginnt die für Djursland charakteristische, nach Osten ausgerichtete Steinküste, die auch dadurch gekennzeichnet ist, dass sie schnell tief wird. Die Steinküste erstreckt sich 50 km südlich von Gjerrild Klint im Norden bis Gåsehage im Süden von Djursland. Die Küste ist an zwei Stellen unterbrochen. Erstens durch die 4 km langen Kalkstein- und Feuersteinklippen bei Karlby und Sangstrup südlich des Gjerrild Klint. An einigen Stellen führen diese Klippen direkt ins Meer. Die Steinküste wird auch durch den 5 km langen Grenaa Strand südlich von Grenaa unterbrochen, der die sandige Mündung des Kolindsund in das Kattegat darstellt. Der Kolindsund ist heute ein landwirtschaftlich genutztes Gebiet, das bis zu zwei Meter unter dem Meeresspiegel liegt, und war bis zum Beginn der Pumparbeiten im Jahr 1870 ein See, der im Mittelalter ein schiffbarer Sund vom Kattegat und 30 km in das Djursland in Richtung Jütland war. In der Steinzeit setzte sich der Kolindsund bis zum Randersfjord fort und trennte damit Norddjursland, einschließlich des Gebiets von Gjerrild, als Insel im steinzeitlichen Meer von Kattegat ab.
