What's That Smell?

            Ever wonder why snakes flick their tongues? Although snakes have nostrils, they also use their tongues to pick up the scent of nearby prey or predators. When the tongue is flicked out, receptors on the tongue pick up minuscule chemical particles floating in the air, which are perceived as scent. 

It must have been close to feeding time for this snake, because it was tongue-flicking repeatedly when I photographed it behind glass at a local nature center. It’s not albino, by the way. It’s leucistic, a rare condition in which an animal produces pigment that is expressed in only certain regions of the body. So this leucistic black rat snake exhibits white scales but has normal colored eyes.
