Bridge Castle (1) - a photo on Flickriver

            If you have been following my posts for a while, you can't have failed to notice that I enjoy a good engraving from time to time!  They manage to engender the past far better than any modern photograph can.  They also tend to show the castles that I so admire in their natural habitat - ie without all the extensions and additions that were added from (mostly) the 19th century onwards, not to mention motor vehicles, satalite dishes, rainwater down-pipes, 'wriggly tin' sheds and all the other ugly essentials of modern life!  This one was drawn in 1807.

Bridge Castle stands on the left bank of the Barbauchlaw Burn (as does the next place I am going to isit), a couple of miles north-west of Bathgate in West Lothian.  It was formerly known as Little Brighouse, which effectively means the same as Bridge Castle.  It was once, as Tranter observed, a place of importance.
