Hawthornden Castle (10) - a photo on Flickriver

            William Drummond, in between writing sonnets, extended the castle.  The L-shaped north range is his work, dated 1638, and it undoubtedly replaced earlier buildings on this side of the courtyard.

The famed Ben Jonson was a visitor here, walking all the way from London to meet his fellow poet, William Drummond of Hawthornden in 1618.  A century and a half later Dr. Samuel Johnson also visited the house.  John Knox is said to have preached 'from a flat stone overlooking the gorge', the stone being known thereafter as Knox's Pulpit - perhaps it was one of the vertical rock buttresses visible here, towering high above the river below.
