Hawthornden Castle (6) - a photo on Flickriver

            This view, looking from the pointy end of the triangle, high above the river, shows where the pend leading from the castle's outer entrance, opens into the courtyard.  A door, not visible from this angle (see photo 3) admits to the current 'main block' of the castle.  There are three panels in the wall here, one bearing the date 1795, another, with a Latin inscription, stating that the castle was restored in 1638 by William Drummond, the famous poet.

You can see one and maybe two of the cave windows in the cliff below the near gable end of the 17th century part of the castle.
