Garter Snake ~ b&w

            About 20 years ago we lived in a house that had a ravine at the back so we'd see lots of deer in our backyard, etc. One spring day I noticed a couple of garter snakes near the base of a lilac tree. I sat down and picked one up and suddenly a whole pile of garter snakes of all sizes were milling around me. They had obviously spent the winter in a den under the lilac and were just emerging from hibernation. A few stuck around, this one climbed into a shrub near our compost. It was an experience I'll never forget. At the time I knew they weren't poisonous, but didn't know they still bit. Not one of them tried to bite me as I was handling them.
