Path To The Temple... - a photo on Flickriver

            Mussenden Temple, Co. Londonderry, Northern Ireland.

Took a weekend away up on the North Coast staying near Bushmills. I was cutting about a lot in my car finding things to photograph. I had passed this Mussenden temple a couple of times since living in Northern Ireland and finally got around to visitiing with my camera.

Mussenden Temple sits on the cliffs overlooking 'Downhill Beach' which was used in the popular HBO Televison show 'Game of Thrones'

Its a stunning site, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean on the North-Western Coast on Northern Ireland, and is one of the most photographed sites the country has.

The temple was built in 1785 and forms part of the estate of Frederick Augustus Hervey, Bishop of Derry and Earl of Bristol (or the Earl Bishop). The temple was built as a summer library and its architecture was inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, near Rome. It is dedicated to the memory of Hervey's cousin Frideswide Mussenden.

I decided to photograph it head on, from the right hand side, and from the left hand side to put into perspective how close it is to the cliff edge. Inside the temple its stripped back to its bare brickwork, and offers stunning views down to the ocean and beach below.
