Design No. 285: Luigi Illica, a mannequin library for the 'Scenes de la vie de Boheme'

The orchestral music of La Boheme offers many hauntingly beautiful moments that for me idealize the characters and their emotions better than the singing. Directly from this orchestral background I can sense Mimi's intense potential for love and Rodolfo's conflicted, ardent yet resigned nature. The orchestra's role is like from a Wagner opera although perhaps I should be making the comparison to Verdi. 

In this design, one of the opera's librettists Luigi Illica is particularly honored. A cafe table is set with some wine, alongside a seamstress's mannequin which has 6 built-in drawers of various sizes to hold a small private library of French philosophy books. The mannequin is ready to hold a seaman's peacoat, a reference to Colline's coat, which he poignantly relinquishes in the opera. Cafe chairs and wineglasses are brought over by other bohemians to sit and listen to some musette music. 

As we approach the holidays I want to bring out a suite of designs related to Puccini's most famous opera, which was coolly received during its world premiere in part for the misconception of its being a lightweight after his powerful Manon Lescaut. I'd like to redeem it with designs that refer to its complexity starting with its libretto.
