Design No. 320. Camera Obscura "Paolo Uccello"

What better way to see Florence? The John Hawkwood funerary monument inspires this elaborate camera obscura Uccello's obsession with this architectural verisimilitude is playfully miniaturized to the level of a portable (more like a tabletop) camera. 

What interested me in doing this design was the wall of the cathedral on which is situated the memorial. This view of the wall, taken as a two-dimensional façade, presented a camera face where from a distance you are simultaneously presented with three objects, a three dimensional "Reliquary" framed with columns, a cathedral window that both draws you in to the stain glass scene as well as diverting in the sunlight which is used to great effect (as I am informed by my reading) in Uccello's painting of Hawkwood, and the actual monument. 

This series of push-pulls that adds diversity to any institutional display wall is further accentuated by the surrounding columns and the row of cathedral benches. Adding to this the chance to demonstrate in a playful manner what Uccello was trying to do in two dimensions (the architectural mimesis) with my own version of 3-D against 2-D backdrops on four walls of a camera body provided a series of contrasts for a "camera architectural folly" that I couldn't really resist.
