L’ altopiano è protetto dall’Unesco per via del prezioso ecosistema alpino e del panorama a cui si può assistere.
Il percorso è ben noto agli escursionisti locali e a quelli più smaliziati, ma è invece ignorato dalla massa, che predilige mete sicuramente belle ma anche assai più rumorose ed affollate, vedi ad esempio i sentieri che salgono al Nuvolau o alla Croda da Lago, oppure Fodara e Sennes, ed altri ancora.
La valle è percorsa dal Ru dei Chenòpe, che ha le sue sorgenti a Pratopiazza.
Il nome del piccolo torrente e della valle ricorda i minatori pusteresi che percorrevano questa strada per andare a lavorare nelle miniere di Giau: chenòpo, -pe in ampezzano è infatti una deformazione del termine tedesco Knappe (in dialetto Knop) “minatore”.
Sull’altopiano sono presenti un albergo (Albergo Croda Rossa) e due rifugi alpini, il rifugio Pratopiazza e il rifugio Vallandro (Dürrensteinhütte in tedesco), dove è possibile pernottare. Vicino a quest’ultimo, all’estremità meridionale dell’altopiano ci sono le rovine del Forte Pratopiazza, resti di un fortino dell’impero austro-ungarico.
