            IL SACRARIO MILITARE.(OSSARIO DEL LEITEN)

Asiago fu uno dei luoghi più simbolici della Grande Guerra. Investita alla fine di maggio del 1916 dall'avanzata austro-ungarica, venne gravemente danneggiata ed occupata dalle truppe asburgiche che la saccheggiarono assieme al vicino abitato di Arsiero. Venne riscostruita alla fine del conflitto e fu scelta, durante il regime fascista, per ospitare uno dei più grandi sacrari militari italiani dedicati alla Grande Guerra.
Il luogo venne individuato sul colle di Leiten (il Sacrario è conosciuto anche con questo nome), collegato al centro città dal monumentale e suggestivo Viale degli Eroi a cui lati sorgono dei grandi cipressi. Il progetto fu dell'architetto veneziano Orfeo Rossato che disegnò un unico e gigantesco blocco di cemento e marmo della zona (di 1600 metri quadrati) sormontato da un grande arco, in stile romano, alto 47 metri. I lavori terminarono nel 1938 ed il Sacrario di Asiago venne inaugurato con grandi celebrazioni alla presenza dello stesso Re Vittorio Emanuele III.
Qui sono state traslate 54.286 salme provenienti dai cimiteri di guerra della zona: 34.286 sono italiane (di cui 21.491 ignoti) mentre le restanti 20.000 sono austro-ungariche (11.762 senza nome). I resti di questi soldati sono ospitati lungo le pareti della gallerie all'interno del grande blocco del Sacrario: quelli identificati sono in ordine alfabetico mentre quelli per cui non è stato possibile effettuare il riconoscimento si trovano all'interno di due grandi tombe comuni ai lati della cripta.

THE MILITARY SACRARY. (LEITEN OSSARY)

Asiago was one of the most symbolic places of the Great War. Hit at the end of May 1916 by the Austro-Hungarian advance, it was severely damaged and occupied by the Habsburg troops who sacked it together with the nearby town of Arsiero. It was rebuilt at the end of the conflict and was chosen, during the Fascist regime, to host one of the largest Italian military shrines dedicated to the Great War.
The place was identified on the hill of Leiten (the Shrine is also known by this name), connected to the city center by the monumental and evocative Viale degli Eroi on which sides there are large cypresses. The project was by the Venetian architect Orfeo Rossato who designed a single and gigantic block of concrete and marble in the area (1600 square meters) surmounted by a large arch, in Roman style, 47 meters high. The works ended in 1938 and the Asiago Shrine was inaugurated with great celebrations in the presence of King Vittorio Emanuele III himself.
Here 54,286 corpses from the war cemeteries of the area were moved: 34,286 are Italian (of which 21,491 unknown) while the remaining 20,000 are Austro-Hungarian (11,762 unnamed).
