Le barene sono elementi del paesaggio lagunare estremamente delicati, tanto che variazioni ambientali, anche minime, possono modificare in modo consistente la loro struttura e copertura vegetale.
Anche le barene però vengono a volte inondate dall’alta marea, che può raggiungere il metro d’altezza. Velme e barene sono ricoperte dalla tipica vegetazione sia salmastra, sia semi-salmastra, come giunchi, piante alofite, limonio. In laguna si trova pure una pianta ormai quasi estinta, l’apocinio veneto.
La laguna di Marano è molto ricca di pesci – dalle celebri oratine di Marano a cefali, mormore, ombrine, anguille, passere, latterini, spigole – di molluschi e di crostacei.

Sandbanks are extremely delicate elements of the lagoon landscape, so much so that environmental variations, even minimal ones, can significantly modify their structure and vegetation cover.
However, even the salt marshes are sometimes flooded by the high tide, which can reach a height of one metre. Mudflats and salt marshes are covered by the typical brackish and semi-brackish vegetation, such as rushes, halophytic plants, limonium. In the lagoon there is also an almost extinct plant, the Venetian apocinius.
The Marano lagoon is very rich in fish – from the famous Marano bream to mullet, bream, croaker, eel, flounder, silverside, sea bass – molluscs and crustaceans.
