FOLLINA. IL CHIOSTRO - a photo on Flickriver

ABBAZIA DI SANTA MARIA

Costruita su una precedente struttura benedettina del XII secolo, l’attuale basilica presenta il tipico disegno a pianta latina con la facciata rivolta a ponente e l’abside a levante, proprio come prevedeva la simbologia cistercense. Con l’arrivo dei Cistercensi il monastero raggiunge l’apice di splendore e potere, soprattutto grazie al rapporto con la famiglia Da Camino.
Lo splendido chiostro dell’abbazia, di età precedente al resto della struttura e perfettamente conservato, fu portato a termine nel 1268, al momento dell’insediamento dei monaci cistercensi. Disposto a quadrato ha, al centro, la tradizionale fontana. La fuga delle colonne è ricca di movimento: tortili, binate, semplici o annodate, presentano capitelli di variegato disegno e una molteplicità di fregi. Sul chiostro si aprono varie sale: la sacrestia, la sala del capitolo e il grande refettorio, ora monumento ai caduti.

ABBEY OF SANTA MARIA

Built on a previous Benedictine structure from the 12th century, the current basilica has the typical Latin plan design with the façade facing west and the apse facing east, just as the Cistercian symbolism predicted. With the arrival of the Cistercians the monastery reached its peak of splendor and power, above all thanks to the relationship with the Da Camino family.
The splendid cloister of the abbey, older than the rest of the structure and perfectly preserved, was completed in 1268, at the time of the settlement of the Cistercian monks. Arranged in a square, it has the traditional fountain in the centre. The escape of the columns is full of movement: twisted, paired, simple or knotted, they have capitals of varied designs and a multiplicity of friezes. Various rooms open onto the cloister: the sacristy, the chapter room and the large refectory, now a war memorial.
