1989-08-30 @ Manchester Piccadilly: Class 90 no. 90029 [slide 5048]

            Wednesday 30/08/1989 sees Class 90 no. 90029 approaching the stock of its next service, the 1118 Manchester Piccadilly-Birmingham New Street.
It is in what was called Mainline livery, one of four supposedly standard liveries unveiled earlier in 1989 (during the BBC TV Railwatch week in the February), the others being InterCity Swallow, Railfreight (triple grey sub-sector) and Departmental (plain grey).  InterCity Swallow and Railfreight already existed at the time, whilst the dull Departmental livery was soon improved with the 'Dutch' yellow band.  The standard liveries didn't include Network SouthEast for one, and the envisaged standardisation was never really achieved, although the Railfreight livery was certainly applied very widely, albeit often without the detailing.
