Església de planta basilical de ST. Pere de Rodes.

El monestir de Sant Pere de Rodes és un dels monestirs més importants dintre del Romànic català.

Té la declaració de Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional, conjuntament amb el Castell de Verdera i el poblat de Santa creu de Rodes. Junts, formen un conjunt monumental de gran interès, amb una vista panoràmica excepcional.

Les primeres notícies documentals daten de l’any 878, en què era un humil cel-la monàstica.

Durant la primera meitat del s. X ja serà una abadia independent. En els s. XI i XII el monestir adoptarà la que serà la seva configuració principal, encara que va ser objecte de successives reformes al llarg de la seva dilatada història, que acaba el 1835 quan és abandonat definitivament, degut als saquejos i a la desamortització.
L’element més important del monument és l’església, obra cabdal i única en el seu tipus dins del romànic català.
La nau central de la basílica és d’una riquesa decorativa i grandiositat excepcionals.
Els capitells, de tipus califal, són de tradició coríntia o amb entrellaçats (decoracions geomètriques i vegetals) i són considerats entre les millors peces escultòriques del s. XI.

També són destacables la torre de defensa (s. X, reformada el s. XIV) i el campanar (finals del s. XI), així com els dos claustres superposats i les restes de decoració pictòrica mural.

Basilica-style church of SANT. Peter of Rhodes

The monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes is one of the most important monasteries within the Catalan Romanesque.

It has the declaration of Cultural Property of National Interest, together with the Castle of Verdera and the town of Santa creu de Rodes. Together, they form a monumental ensemble of great interest, with an exceptional panoramic view.

The first documentary news date from the year 878, when it was a humble monastic cell.

During the first half of the century. X will already be an independent abbey. In the s. XI and XII the monastery will adopt what will be its main configuration, although it was the subject of successive reforms throughout its long history, which ends in 1835 when it is definitively abandoned, due to looting and confiscation.
The most important element of the monument is the church, a key work and unique of its kind within the Catalan Romanesque.
The central nave of the basilica is of exceptional decorative richness and grandeur.
The capitals, of the caliphal type, are of the Corinthian tradition or with interlacing (geometric and vegetal decorations) and are considered among the best sculptural pieces of the s. XI.

The defense tower (10th century, renovated in the 14th century) and the bell tower (end of the 11th century) are also noteworthy, as well as the two superimposed cloisters and the remains of pictorial wall decoration.
