Goodbye, Ole Gal, Part 1 - a photo on Flickriver

            In April, 2013, the years of unfulfilled renovations to the former Chicago, Burlington, & Quincy train station in Aurora, IL finally came home to roost.  When a series of very heavy rains that resulted in some of the worst flooding on the Fox and Illinois Rivers in modern times was followed by a couple of days of very strong windy days, it proved to be too much for the water-logged brick and rotten roof timbers to handle, and a large portion of the roof collapsed.  Deemed structurally unsound, demolition permits were expedited, and within a few days, the razing would commence.  This unique, two story station had loomed over downtown Aurora for decades.  It was hoped that it would be the cornerstone of revival on the city's near-East side, but alas, it ultimately succumbed not to the elements, but to greed.  As testimony to its construction, it took almost two weeks for complete demolition.  As of 2016, the site remained just a hole in the ground.

These images were taken the day of the collapse.  The are the last images I had ever taken of the station while it was in "one piece."  Demolition began promptly a few days later.
