Common cottongrass (Eriophorum angustifolium)

            One of the characteristic features of British peat bogs is the spattering of little tufts of what looks like pure white cotton wool. These tufts are the cottongrasses, a small group of plants which thrives in such damp places. despite their name, they are not grasses but close relations of the sedges, and can mostly be recognised as such by their three sided stems. There are four native species of cottongrass in Britain, but the most usual and most recognised is this one. It has a head of nodding flowering spikes, and it's stems and leaves are three sided only at their tips. The strands that make up the ball of cotton wool begin as short hairs. After pollination of the flower and ripening of the fruit, they elongate until they form a fluffy ball. The fluffy heads were once used for making candle wicks. Apparently they are still excellent for stuffing pillows and mattresses if enough can be collected
