Meeting of Minds

            Steam's future at Sandaoling was hanging in the balance in February 2017 as a meeting was due a few months later with all the major stakeholders of the mine to decide whether to replace the railway with lorries to transport coal out of the pit (though it seems every year there is news it will finish imminently, the latest being September 2021). With this is mind we were out pretty much every morning and evening at Dongbolizhan for the shift change in order to maximise our photographic opportunities. All 4 loco's working in the open cast pit would arrive in order to be watered and change crews, with each loco being worked by a 3 man crew on a 12 hour shift. 

In one of the largest concentrations of real working steam left in the world, from left to right, JS class no. 8190, 8081 and 8225 await their crews for the night shift on the evening of 15th February 2017. The fourth loco had already run light engine down to the bottom of the pit on the "passenger train".
