Heracles’ first Labor: the Nemean Lion by The Gallatin P.

            The scene drawn on the hydria shoulder shows the well-known myth of Heracles strangling the invulnerable Nemean Lion with the bare hands
Athena seated on a block, wearing an high crested helmet and holding the spear in his right hand, stretches his left hand towards the hero with a gesture of support. Iolaus, wearing a short mantle, the sword hanged on his back, is standing behind Herakles, holding his club unuseful against the lion. His right hand is stretched towards the hero with a gesture of support. Athena, the helmet, spear in her left hand, and wearing her typical Aegis fringed by snakes is moving toward Heracles. His left arm is raised in his direction with a gesture of support in this decisive moment of the fighting.
