The Round Hall: Heracles Mastai - a photo on Flickriver

            Heracles is portrayed as a young man with a light beard. The hero is standing with his right hand leant on the club. The skin of the Nemean lion is wrapped around his left bent arm. The hand outstretched toward the viewer holds the pomes of the Hesperides. His head is surrounded by a sash. 
This gilded bronze sculpture reproduces a highly valued artwork dating around 390-370 BC, perhaps itself inspired to a previous classical model: the Heracles of Myron (half of the fifth century BC).
Its dating is uncertain and varies by the Flavian to the Severian age and beyond. If the youthful body of Hercules shows characteristics compatible with the stylistic taste of the Antonine age, the rendering of the hair shifts its dating toward the second half of the second century AD. Moreover, the strong features of the face and the rendering of the pupils with engraved irises, fit the stylistic requirements the age tetrarchical.
