Julio-Claudians: Livia and Tiberius - a photo on Flickriver

            This pair of seated statues found at Paestum, represent Livia together her son, the emperor Tiberius. They are one of the most outstanding pieces from the collection of Roman art of the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid. 
These portraits date from the time of the early reign of Tiberius, when the emperor allowed her to participate in his government (ca. A.D. 14-24). Tiberius is the ﬁrst who issued coins with Livia’s portrait. There are no portraits of Livia on coins of Augustus because the right of having their own coins was not bestowed on empresses until they officially became Augusta, and this happened to the first empress Livia only after the death of her husband. 
Tiberius honored his mother not as an ordinary woman, but rather represented her on the reverse of coins as Pax, Justitia, Salus and Pietas with the obverse of divus Augustus. 
Livia is wearing two garments: tunica and palla. The tunic is buttoned or sewn along the sleeve at the shoulder and worn under other garments. The outer garment, the palla, is a mantle worn over the shoulders that could be wrapped around the body for warmth and decorum. The palla was also used by women to veil their heads in public as symbols of modesty and chastity and at sacrifices as symbols of piety.
Tiberius is portrayed in heroic nudity with the mantle fastened on his right shoulder.
