Aithiopis IV – Ajax and Achilles’ body by The Camel Painter

Ajax carrying the body of Achilles.
The lost epic “Aithiopis” told that, after killing Memnon, Achilles pursued the Trojans back across the plain and might have forced his way into the city if he had not been shot in the ankle by Paris, or by Apollo, or by both together. A late tradition suggested that he was invulnerable except at the ankle. During the struggle that ensued for his body and divine armor, Ajax managed to hoist the corpse onto his shoulders, and then carried it back to the Greek ships while Odysseus fought off the Trojans from behind.
This skyphos, attributed to the Camel Painter, shows Ajax, armed with a Boeotian shield, quite upright, walking with measured steps, the body of Achilles over his shoulder. An archer, surely Teuker, Ajax half-brother, follows the heroes. He was the son of King Telamon of Salamis Island and Hesione, daughter of King Laomedon of Troy. Behind him a woman stands quietly, balanced on the left of the composition by an old man. In the background, the “eidolon” representation of the soul of Achilles ﬂies away, and in front of the heroes is a prancing lion.
