Delphi, The Sacred Way – XII – The Athenians’ Stoa

            In the foreground, two Hellenistic bases built in honor of Eumenes II, “Soter”,  and Attalus of Pergamon in 159/8 BC;  behind the honorary monuments, krepsis, stylobate and columns of the Athenians' Stoa; in the back-ground, over the Polygonal Wall, the standing remains of the Apollo’s Temple columns 
The stepped base of the monument, “krepis”, made of limestone, has up to three steps depending on the level of the surrounding soil. The siding of its stones recalls the base of the Treasury of the Athenians. A dedication carved on the higher step guarantees the identity of the donors. The portico has an unique colonnade of marble Ionic columns made with monolithic fluted drums worked with 16 grooves. The columns, made of Pentelic marble with bases made of Parian marble, are 3.31 m high including the capital. They appear slender: their height is equal to 8.48 lower diameters, while the interaxle spacing is 3.58 m. The combination of these elements, in spite of the modest height of the columns, provides a feeling of slenderness and lightness. The portico was 26.5 meters long and was 3.10 meters width. The large openings between the columns allowed ample light into the building, probably covered with a wooden roof.
The traces on the back wall allow us to hypothesize, above the continuous line of the floor, the insertion of wood supports, between which texts were inscribed in the 2nd and 1st centuries. According to Pausanias, the portico was decorated with ornaments of prows (or sterns) and bronze shields decorated with inscriptions concerning a battle won by the Athenian Phormion over the Peloponnesians in 429 BC.
The dedication, engraved on the stylobate in large archaic letters, is not sufficiently explicit to set the date of the building.  It reads: 
Ἀθεναῖοι ἀνέθεσαν τὲν στοὰν καί τὰ ℎόπλ̣[α κ]αὶ τἀκροτέρια ℎελόντες τōν πολε[μίον] - 
“The Athenians dedicated the portico and the ropes and the figure heads of the ships that they seized from the enemies”.
According to the reported inscription, the portico was constructed after the naval victories against the Persians at Mycale and Sestos in 478 B.C.
