"Iliou Persis" [Ἰλίου Πέρσις] "The Sack Of Troy" - III

The depictions of Priamus’ death at an altar date at least to the sixth century BCE. This image show the horrible death of Priamus and Astyanax, killed by Neoptolemus. Priam is lying on his back over the altar of Zeus Herkeios – “Guardian of the House”; his head and arms hang lifelessly. On his left, Neoptolemus grasping the lower leg of the still living Astyanax in order to smash him on the corpse of his grandfather. To left two spectators, a man and a woman both with lance, have a compassion gesture by raising an arm.
To right, a female figure, Andromache or Hecuba, stretches out both arms imploringly to Neoptolemus. Behind her two spear-wielding Trojans with outstretched shields.
King Priam wears a long royal, red and black robe with incised crosses; his cloak lies diagonally over the altar decorated by a black, red and white diamonds pattern. Neoptolemus’ helmet, shield, armor, chiton and greaves are red; the crest is white. Astyanax has red hair. The woman on the left corner wears a red peplos and headband; the man near her wears a black robe decorated by a row of five large, vertically arranged rosettes; the ends of his cloak are red, as well as his hair and beard. The female figure identified as Andromache or Hecuba has a red peplos and a thick red headband. Two Trojans warriors are painted on the right corner of the scene; they are equipped with shield, crested helmet, greaves and have a raised spear.
