Taw Valley at Horsted Keynes: first train of the day

            The first train on the first day of the Autumn "Giants of Steam" gala pulls into Horsted Keynes Station on Friday October 13th 2023. The signalman is exchanging the single line token with the loco's fireman.

The locomotive is 21C127 (or as most of us would know it: 34027) "Taw Valley", a vistor to the railway for the gala. The ungainly numering system used by Bulleid on the Southern Railway goes with the pre-nationalisation livery carried by Taw Valley. In fact none of these locomotives ever appeared in this guise as the rebuilding off this class was carried out in the 1950's by British Railways.
 
The weather as can easily be seen, was very wet at the start of the day - the rain is bouncing off the platform! Fortunately it cleared up as the day went on.

Stabled out of use in the background is Maunsell Southern Railway "U" class number 31638.

One missing element from this gala was the lovely couple who have, for many years, managed the crossing at the north end of Horsted Keynes station. If anyone reads this and knows the lady, perhaps they could pass on best wishes to her - I understand she has now retired.
