Maroon 1976 Beetle

            The Volkswagen Beetle was nearing the end of its run in America by 1976, thanks to stricter emissions standards.  Even though the Rabbit sold over 112,000 units in the States, exceeding its record-breaking (for a first-year import model) 1975 totals, Volkswagen of America managed to sell 27,009 Beetles.  Not a  very significant number, you might think, until you remember that VW sales in the U.S. totaled 201,670 - a 64 percent drop from the firm's 1970 peak and the lowest annual sales figures recorded since 1961.  So, in our bicentennial year, the Beetle accounted for 13.4 percent of VW's total sales - significant indeed for a car that was on its way out.  And it spelled trouble for VW, as it was becoming apparent that Americans wouldn't embrace the new watercooled models - Beetle sales here were more than half of the combined total of Dasher and Scirocco sales in 1976 - as warmly as their European cousins did.

1976 was the penultimate year for the hardtop Beetle.  This is also my penultimate picture from the 2011 All Aircooled Gathering.
