Roof: Calvary Baptist Church--Detroit MI

            Nationally recognized architect Gunnar Birkerts designed this modernistic structure in 1977 for an African-American congregation that dates to 1919. The orange roof inevitably leads critics to compare it to a Howard Johnson's. If you're in the area (next to Elmwood Cemetery), judge for yourself.

The church is an outstanding example of mid-century modern design in Michigan.
