Immortelle violette (Gomphrena globosa)

            Amaranthacée de 30-60 cm,aux feuilles opposées, sessiles, simples et entières, oblongues-lancéolées et pileuses sur les deux faces. Inflorescence terminale et axillaire subglobuleuse, de 2 cm. Très petites fleurs blanches entourées de nombreuses bractées magenta-clair. Des cultivars de cette espèce présentent des fleurs aux bractées rouges, roses, violettes, lilas et blanches. Utricule (organe ayant la forme d'une petite outre) généralement indéhiscent de 2,5 mm, avec des graines ovoïdes, brunes et brillantes d'environ 1,5 mm.

Autres noms français : Amarantine globuleuse (Gomphrena vient du latio gomphaena, ancien nom pour une amarante), Eternelle. Espèce originaire d'Amérique tropicale : Brésil, Panama et Guatemala, qui conserve sa couleur mauve ou violette, même séchée (cf. A Gurib-Fakim Guide de la Flore de Maurice, mi-aime-a-ou.com).
