One of the first hints of the colors to come

            Way back in 2012 I decided to ease into retirement mode by taking some trips - I think I did 10 of them - one of them was to Maui in March 2012. Maui is such a cool place - especially coming from an Alaskan winter. While in Maui I went hiking in Haleakala National Park. There are two parts of Haleakala - the Summit District and also a section near Hana. I took the Sliding Sands trail in the Summit District; the trail is about 5 miles but starts high - I think at 9,900 feet; you descend over 1,000 feet and have to make it up on the way back - thank God for cold beer!! The trail passes by several volcanic cinder cones - it is amazing. The colors are fantastic - and yes, this is a place I'd love to go back to!!
