Durham cathedral interior - a photo on Flickriver

            Durham cathedral interior, looking down the mighty Norman nave toward the west end. As well as being famous for being the first building to use pointed arches for massive structural purposes the cathedral is also an exceptional example of Norman (Romanesque) style architecture as shown here with the giant piers that have regular geometric patterns on every second pier. Similar themes are carried throughout most of the cathedral such as on the outer arches of the triforium, the ribs of the vault and the blind arcading in the aisles.
