La statue d’Aphrodite en marbre découverte sur l’île grecque de Mélos en 1820 et dite « vénus de Milo », entre au Louvre en 1821. L’ambassadeur de France en Grèce, le marquis de Rivière (1775 -1828), l’acquiert dès sa découverte et l’offre aussitôt au roi Louis XVIII qui l’offre à son tour au Louvre. Comme sur la médaille frappée en 1822 et glorifiant le musée royal sous le règne de Louis XVIII, ce moulage évoque ici la présence de la célébrissime  statue dans les collections d’antiques du Louvre l’année où Champollion déchiffre les hiéroglyphes.
