Doing my peritoneal dialysis : - a photo on Flickriver

            With visits to the cemetery approaching to celebrate Tomb Sweeping/QingMing, I am dealing with issues affecting my mortality.

My kidney transplant surgeon recently told me that I am currently not a candidate for a kidney transplant until I get a heart bypass operation since a stent procedure failed.  An open chest heart operation would be risky, as would be the kidney transplant.

The surgeon thinks that given my advanced age and given the surgical risks, that my best option would be to continue with my PD therapy for the foreseeable future.  I have been doing PD for six years and my health remains good.  Additionally, I have dealt with diabetes for 20 years with diet, oral meds and insulin.

As seen in the photo taken in my hotel room, PD requires the infusion and draining of a glucose solution [from the bag hanging from the closet rod to my abdominal cavity via the blue transfer set and catheter and then to  the drain bag on the floor].  This is done four times a day manually, or for nine hours overnight with a machine assist per my current Rx.  PD uses the process of osmosis through the peritoneum  that lines the abdominal cavity to remove toxins from my blood that normally would have been filtered by the kidney.

At least I can enjoy both my dressing and traveling with this self administered home therapy, something that I could not do if I had to do hemodialysis in a clinic.  HD filters the blood through a physical filter similar to a car's oil filter.

Yes, my makeup does get smudged by the surgical mask.
