"The Foamer's Hotel" - a photo on Flickriver

My wife's description.....but it is dead accurate.

Our winter family vacation consisted of a ride on Amtrak's Empire Builder from Milwaukee to St. Paul and return, and our stay was in a hotel that was built as the Northern Pacific's car shops.

If you are a train enthusiast, enjoy historic buildings or are just looking for a place to stay with some really serious character, this is it.

This shot shows the breakfast bar that is built to look like a replica the Minnehaha depot. Tall lofty ceilings with huge timbers support the building with natural light pouring in from the roof top windows throughout the building (was near dusk when I shot this). The rails are still in the concrete floor as seen in this shot. Exterior windows are the old shops doors. Cream bricks make up the exterior walls. So much to see and appreciate; the inclusion of the hotel rooms in the structure was done very tastefully and preserves as much as possible of the original feel of the building. Endless photographic opportunities......

This structure is part of an entire complex of NP shop buildings that now serve as office buildings, the hotel, and a medical clinic. A steam engine, BN box car and sand tower still grace the property as well.
