The mask of Pulcinella , was invented in Naples officially by actor Silvio Fiorillo in the second half of the sixteenth century, but his modern costume was invented in the nineteenth century by Antonio Petito. In fact, originally, the mask of Fiorillo wore a bicorne hat (other than the current "Sugar Loaf") and wore beards and moustaches. Pulcinella's origins are much older, however. The assumptions are varied: some people it does descend from "Pulcinello" a small chick because she has the nose hooked; There are those who argue that a peasant of Acerra, Puccio D'Aniello, in ' 600 joined as a buffoon to a wandering troupe of transition in his country. Still others, like Margarete Bieber go even further back in time until the 4th century BC and argue that Pulcinella descends from Maccus, a character of the Roman Atellane.  Maccus was a type of long-nosed servant and lumpy-faced with big cheeks with prominent belly, wearing a large white shirt.
Others trace the mask to another character of the Atellanae Fabulae: Kikirrus, form teriomorfa (animal-looking) whose name, in fact, draws the line of cock. The latter form more closely resembles the mask of Pulcinella .        (    from   wikipedia )
