Fivebrough Wetland Leeton - a photo on Flickriver

            RAMSAR wetland in western NSW.  This wetland is located in a part of the Murray Darling basin where rice growing has been conducted for the past few decades.  The plains are dead flat and the soils are rich.  Water is drawn from upstream in the basin around the Snowy Mountains and poured across the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area,  an area that is semi desert without this huge intervention. Farmers in this region continue to draw on water from the Basin, to the long term detriment of the environment, particularly in downstream areas including Adelaide.  This is the wetland during a dry spell.
