TWPTE 380, Olive Street, Sunderland, 1983

            In 1978, Tyne and Wear PTE ordered 40 MCW bodied Leyland Fleetlines, numbered 366 - 405. The buses were delivered to TWPTE between March and November 1979. 

There were also 50, MCW bodied Leyland Atlantean's (184-233) ordered at the same time, but they are not the subject of this posting.

As far as I am aware, the MCW Fleetlines vehicles saw almost exclusive use in the Sunderland and South Shields districts of the TWPTE/Busways operating area. 

Unfortunately, the longer term effects of the sea air combined with the damp, began to corrode the steel-framed bodies of these MCW buses; the type not fairing as well as their Alexander bodied counterparts.

Following withdrawal, some of these buses went direct to scrap, while others gave further service to operators, particularly in and around Merseyside in the 1990s. 

The picture shows 380 in Olive Street, Sunderland in May 1983, the bus had been new April 1979. 

Today, it is difficult to imagine buses accessing Olive Street as it is restricted in its width by parking bays for cars, and at its junction with Park Lane, it has long been pedestrianised.
