Walsall 342, Bloxwich Road, Birchills, 03/10/1970

            Walsall trolleybus 342 seen from the upper saloon of a following trolleybus, during the last day of trolleybus operations in Walsall.

342 was one of 10 Brush bodied Sunbeam F4 trolleybuses that had been delivered new to Walsall in 1951. During the early 1960s, 342 was heavily rebuilt and modified by Walsall Corporation in their engineering workshops at Birchills Depot. 342's chassis was lengthened using motorbus components, the body having an extra bay added accommodating nine more passenger seats. This took the bus from 56-seats to a capacity of 65-seats. Reintroduced to service in 1965, 342 was the only trolleybus of this batch modified in this way. 

In 1961, four trolleybuses were acquired from Grimsby-Cleethorpes. Three of these buses were lengthened, but given forward entrances with platform doors. These buses were numbered 875 to 877 in the Walsall fleet. The fourth  trolleybus 874 (GFU692), was not rebuilt and remained in its as built condition.

Both 342 and 874 are still with us and are preserved at the Sandtoft Trolleybus Museum near Doncaster.
