BrightBus 6011, breaker's yard, Carlton, South Yorks, 2017

            An unfortunate scene to record  was the sight of this 12-metre long, ex Hong Kong 'Super Metrobus' in a Yorkshire scrap yard.

Latterly operated by Brightbus (Mass Transit) of North Anston, South Yorkshire, the bus had been imported from Hong Kong in c2000. The Birmingham built Metrobus had been new to the China Motor Bus company as their ML80 in November 1988 (registered EA1844). 

In 2000, all non air-conditioned buses were withdrawn from passenger service in Hong Kong, many being exported for further use. A number of these buses went to Australia and Britain. 

On arrival into the UK, ML80 acquired an age-related 1988 'F' vehicle registration number. It was later re-registered B10MSE. 

Adapted for the British climate,  the bus lost its full-depth sliding side-windows and vented front windows for conventional types. ML80 became one of a number of 3-axle double-decker buses to be acquired by Mass / Brightbus for school contract operations in South Yorkshire. ML80 had previously worked for other UK operators before purchase by BrightBus, including Weavaway's of Greenham Common and Weaver's of Newbury.

In July 2017, the owner of BrightBus retired due to ill health and the business closed. Some of the older buses such as ML80 did not find further use and were sold for scrap.

The hapless vehicle is pictured in Trevor Wigley's scrap yard at Carlton, South Yorkshire on 09th August 2017. At the time, the bus was in the process of having its engine and transmission removed prior to breaking. Although painted externally, ML80 still carried its original blue CMB interior colours.
