PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE JAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN - ACMI LIVE IN THE STUDIO -TRUE BLOOD: SECOND BITE - MELBOURNE 30.6.2011

The ACMI (Australian Centre For The Moving Image) "Live In Studio: True Blood - Second Bite" panel on June 30th, 2011, at Federation Square, Melbourne.

We had a good old chin wag about our mutual admiration of the vampire telly series "True Blood".

Included in the mix were audio/visual presentations plus a vi-Skype interview I did with Ryan Kwanten, the Aussie actor who plays Jason Stackhouse.

We drummed up a lot of good P.R for the session beforehand with interviews in "Beat", "Melbourne City Weekly", "MCV" magazine and on "Joy F.M" radio.

The session sold out early, so it was just as well I was the M.C 'cos I wanted to attend anyway!

I tackled the concept of "True Blood" as comedy, comparing it to other vamp related large and small screen satires. It seemed to be well received and at any rate provided the opportunity for plenty of laughs as it really is a very funny show.

Emily wowed me with a very learnedly salacious presentation about sexuality in "True Blood" and Helena neatly placed the show in context of other vampire series and movies in its approach to its dental enhancements.

One of the things I enjoy about "T.B" is its cheerfully egalitarian approach to class. The vampire 'nobles' are hilariously tacky, and the show often reads like a sort of fanged "My Name Is Earl" as it explores the concept of Southern vampire rednecks. ("Near Dark", anyone?)

With that in mind I thought I'd go for a 'trucker' sort of costume, with hunting vest and flannel shirt, topped off with a
"Merlottes Bar" logo baseball cap. (I just remembered that the flannel shirt is the last birthday pressie my dear old late mother got me! Awww....) Well shoot, at least it was comfortable! Apart from which, I also bear a passing resemblance to the veteran Hunter, Bobby, from "Supernatural". Look out Bon Temps, if the WInchester brothers come to town!
