Notre-Dame-du-Portage - Notre-Dame-du-Portage, Quebec IMG_3965

            At the head of a strategic 60-km portage (carrying) trail linking the St. Lawrence R. to a tributary of the St. John R., which was used for centuries by native canoeists and early fur traders as an overland shortcut towards (or from) the Bay of Fundy/Gulf of Maine.  (A tough slog over the height of land with bags and a boat on your back - but better than having to paddle the 2500 km all-water route!) 

A small settlement of farmers and fishermen began here in the mid-1600's.  The fur trade's expansion increased its importance, with the village and parish finally officially incorporated in 1856.  Both were dedicated to Our Lady, to whom (along with her mother, St. Anne) the "voyageurs" customarily prayed or gave thanks for safe passage through a difficult section of their route.

The church was completed in 1863.
