Built 1851-53, to the Neo-Gothic plans of Victor Bourgeau.

A well-regarded up-and-coming architect at the time, the success of this project was such that it led to his designation as official architect for the diocese of Montreal.

Among his charges, he was assigned the re-construction of the diocese' recently burned St.-Jacques Cathedral (1858); the re-design of the interior of Notre-Dame Basilica (1870-80 - www.flickr.com/photos/84253735@N04/12470918584/in/datepos...); the construction of the diocese' new Marie-Reine du Monde Cathedral (1870-94 - www.flickr.com/photos/84253735@N04/23726508866/in/datepos...); and many other churches within the diocese.

His work was not confined to it, however; he also designed the cathedrals for the dioceses of Trois-Rivières and of Rivière-du-Loup (www.flickr.com/photos/84253735@N04/10881253784/in/datepos...), and drew up or contributed to the plans of numerous churches in other smaller centres, including St.-Barthélemy (www.flickr.com/photos/84253735@N04/9735193684/in/photolis...) and Sainte-Trinité (www.flickr.com/photos/84253735@N04/10095582395/in/datepos...), to name a few examples.
