Chicago Auto Show: Dodge Challenger - a photo on Flickriver

...the Chicago Auto Show is an eldorado for car enthusiasts - especially those with a camera. The problem is that there are lots of people everywhere making photography challenging. If you want perfect shots it is probably better to show up on a weekday instead of on the first Saturday of the show as I did.

It is fun to shot with my f/1.4 lens. It gives delicious depth of field and it has no problem with challenging lighting conditions. The problem is that you frequently want to shot wider than 50mm - especially given that people are always in the way. Details on cars are fun, but often you end up wanting to shoot the entire car.

So why not just use my allround lens? Problem is that my allround lens is too slow if you zoom in a bit. The 18-250mm Tamron quickly becomes a f/5.6 or f/6.3 when you zoom - and even at ISO1600 - you quickly run out of light. Even though the light at auto show is extremely nice sometimes (especially on the rotating concept vehicles) many vehicles have less than favorable light.

This shot of the new Dodge Challenger came out well. The dof and focus were both good. I like the rich orange tones on the car. This car is supposed to take on the Ford Mustang and the new Chevrolet Camero. The Mustang is a dog so hopefully either of the the newcomers will be better.

By the way, this show can easily shallow your entire afternoon. I think I spent over 4-5 hours in there!

Ranting about lenses....I initially included this above, but then decided that (1) I did not want to delete it and (2) it was too big of a digression to include it above...

Clearly I need a new lens (lenses!), but I have no clue what to buy these days. I want
a good 70-200mm zoom lens. I've been told that the 70-200mm f/4 L is a good bargain, but I want IS. IS quickly adds money. Also a faster lens would be nice, the trophy being the 70-200mm IS f/2.8. However, I'd love a short-range lens as well. The 18-75mm IS is nice. Or maybe I should go with a cheap mid-range lens. Say the kit lens on the 40D (28-135mm IS) or if I want to spend the excellent 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM that comes with the 5D.
