Stamenite. Magenta Cherry, Syzygium paniculatum, Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

            So you, too. You've also wondered about that interesting word 'Syzygium'. Well, it goes back on the Greek which means something like 'paired' or 'two of a kind"; it's used in many fields, e.g. astronomy, logic, mathematics and biology. In this Magenta Cherry it refers to the way the foliage - the leaves - is paired.
Anyway... Yes, indeed! Those magenta 'cherries' are quite edible and they're often made into a nice jam. Next time I go to Australia I must have a taste of it again. For that's from where our Syzygium paniculatum hails. It was collected during Captain Cook's first circumnavigation of Earth at Botany Bay. There two naturalist members of his expeditionary force, Joseph Banks (1743-1820) and David Carlsson Solander (1733-1782) found it in 1770. It was described in 1778 by Joseph Gaertner (1732-1791) with the name Eugenia paniculata.
