Timeless Fishing. Pupput Mosaic and Hammamet Tile Plateau, Hammamet, Tunisia

            It is said that pretty Tunisian Hammamet takes its name - Arabic for 'many baths' - from the ancient Roman 'colonia' of Pupput (see my posting of yesterday). Pupput's ruins are located a few miles south of the city also right along the seashore. 
When you visit that archaelogical site you'll be surprised by a very wealth of antique baths (thermae) and homes, most with highly detailed mosaic floors. I've inset a very realistic and lively mosaic fish (left) dating from Late Antiquity. On the right is a humorous piscatorial tile plateau in an outside wall of a fisherman's house in the 'modern' city. Fishermen houses here are often adorned with such signs from 'primitive' to highly decorative.
