Rollways, Cooke Pond - Lumberman's Monument

             During the lumbering era in northern Michigan this steep slope above the Au Sable River was utilized by lumbermen during spring thaw for transporting huge piles of logs harvested during the winter.  With the high water and strong currents of early spring the logs were released downhill to where they would float downstream to the mills in Oscoda and Au Sable.  This practice came to an end with the depletion of the white pine forests and the construction of the Cooke hydroelectric dam in 1911, the first in a series of six hydro dams built along the Au Sable River by Consumers Power.   Instead of logs piled at the top of the Rollways sand dunes have formed from the westerly winds blowing loose sand over the top of the slope.
